This page explains what happens to your personal data when you visit The Cybersecurity Guide or write to us. The site does very little with your data, and this page says exactly what.

Who is responsible. Anthony Russo EI, based in France, publishes this site and decides how your data is used. You can reach us at [email protected].

When you visit the site

Our site is hosted by Cloudflare, Inc., a company based in the United States. When you load a page, Cloudflare processes technical data about your visit so it can deliver the site and protect it from attacks. Cloudflare says this information may include your IP address (the number that identifies your internet connection), traffic routing data and other information about the traffic.

You do not need an account to read the site, and we do not ask you for any information to do so.

Cloudflare explains how it handles this data in its privacy policy. It says it primarily stores information in the United States and the European Economic Area. For people who visit its customers’ websites, it also says it directs their requests about personal data to the website they visited. That website is ours.

Cookies

The pages of this site do not set cookies of their own, and we use no advertising cookies.

Cloudflare may set a few cookies of its own to protect the site. Which ones, if any, depends on the protections Cloudflare applies to our site at the time. Two examples from Cloudflare’s cookie page:

  • __cf_bm supports Cloudflare’s bot protection. It expires after 30 minutes of inactivity. Cloudflare says it creates a separate one for each site you visit and does not track you from site to site.
  • cf_clearance records that you passed a security check, so you are not asked to pass it again.

Cloudflare says that, unless it states otherwise, its cookies are “strictly necessary to provide the services requested by our customers.”

Measuring visits

This site uses no audience-measurement tool today. We plan to add one later: Google Analytics, loaded through Cloudflare Zaraz, behind a consent banner. If we do, we will update this page first and say what it collects.

Emails you send us

If you write to us, we use your email address and your message to answer you and, if you report a mistake, to fix the page. Writing to us does not put you on a mailing list. We delete your messages once we no longer need them to answer you or to fix a page.

Our newsletter

The signup form at the bottom of our pages sends your email address, only if you tick the consent box, to the signup system we run ourselves for all our sites. We keep it there to send you our newsletter once it starts, and only for that. To block spam, the form may also show Cloudflare Turnstile, a check that tells people from bots. It loads only once you start filling in the form. Cloudflare says Turnstile uses technical signals, such as your IP address and browser details, to do this, and its Turnstile Privacy Addendum explains how. We have not chosen a sending service yet: when we do, we will name it on this page first. We keep your address until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete it. We do not sell it, and we do not share it with anyone for their own use.

Today, no page on this site has a paid link. When we add some, they will point to an address on our own site that sends you on to the company’s website. After you click, that company may set its own cookies, for example to record that you came from us so that we earn a commission. We do not control those cookies, and the company’s own privacy policy applies to them. We always mark paid links: see our advertising disclosure.

What we do not do

  • We do not sell your personal information.
  • We do not share it for advertising.
  • We do not use advertising cookies or advertising trackers.

Your rights

Because our publisher is established in France, the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) applies to the personal data we handle, wherever you live. It gives you the right to:

  • Access: ask whether we hold personal data about you, and get a copy.
  • Rectification: have wrong data corrected.
  • Erasure: have your data deleted.
  • Objection: object to how we use your data.

The GDPR also gives you other rights, such as asking us to restrict how we use your data and asking for it in a portable format. The European Data Protection Board lists them all.

To use any of these rights, write to [email protected]. We will answer within one month. If your request is complex, the law lets us take up to two more months, and we will tell you if we need them.

If you think we have not respected your rights, write to us first. If we do not answer, or you are not satisfied, you can file a complaint with the CNIL, the French data protection authority. The CNIL asks you to contact the organization first. Its complaint page is in French, and it says a complaint must be written in French.

If you live in the United States

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for advertising. You can still ask us for any of the things listed above.

Children

This site is for adults. It is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you think a child under 13 has sent us personal information, write to us and we will delete it.

Changes to this policy

When we change what this page says in a way that matters, we update the “Last updated” date at the top. If we add an audience-measurement tool, or anything that sets advertising cookies, we will change this page before it starts.
